Dear Parents and Prospective Students:                                                                                         August 1, 2002

It is with great pleasure that I write a letter of reference on behalf of Mr. Andreas Hartmann, as he opens his piano studio.  My two children have studied with Mr. Hartmann for the past year, and they give him two very enthusiastic thumbs up!  As parents, my husband and I have been tremendously impressed with Mr. Hartmann as a teacher, as a musician, and as a person.

Mr. Hartmann invites parents to sit in on their children’s lessons, so I have observed him working with my children over many hours.  As a teacher, Mr. Hartmann has a remarkable ability to bring out the best in children with very different temperaments and learning styles.  My husband and I have seen this vividly in Mr. Hartmann’s efforts with our two very different children.  Our 7-year-old daughter, Leyla, has an innate love of music, enjoys playing, and needs little encouragement to practice.  When Leyla has expressed enthusiasm for tunes in her Level-2 lesson book, Mr. Hartmann has been able to identify more challenging pieces from other sources for her to try.  His work with Leyla has helped her both to learn the more challenging pieces, and at the same time, to develop her own strategies to tackle new pieces on her own.  Since Mr. Hartmann began working with Leyla last fall, she has gone from playing relatively simple tunes from the lesson book to playing short blues and classical pieces; she is currently working on her first Beethoven piece!  We have all been impressed with her quick progress.  Leyla loves the feeling of accomplishment and proudly plays her growing repertoire.  In contrast, our 10-year-old son, Noah, while capable, is nowhere near as highly motivated to play as his sister.  Through a combination of patience, kindness, and humor, Mr. Hartmann has helped Noah maintain his interest and make steady progress in learning to play.  To me, the ability to bring the best out in two such very different children is the mark of an outstanding teacher.

As well, Mr. Hartmann is a nice guy.  He is uniformly cheerful and positive in his outlook, and is a positive influence on our children.  When the need arises, Mr. Hartmann can be firm, but his firmness is always tempered with kindness.  He is honest and dedicated, and he has a lively sense of humor.

As a family, we have all had several opportunities to listen to Mr. Hartmann play, both formally at his own recitals, and informally during piano lessons.  We have found his performances impressive.  His love of music -- of all types --  as expressed in his playing, is readily apparent, highly contagious, and altogether inspiring.

In short, on behalf of my children, I recommend Mr. Hartmann to you -- and your children -- without reservation.  I could go on, but will instead suggest that if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (nancyo@indstate.edu) for additional information.

Sincerely,
Nancy J. Obermeyer, Ph.D.
