To whom It May Concern,                                                                                                              August 20, 2002

I am writing to warmly recommend Andreas Hartmann, an excellent teacher and an accomplished pianist.

Andreas Hartmann has extensive teaching experience including college piano teaching.  Since 1997 he has taught on the faculty of the I.U. Young Pianists Program, which I direct.  I have observed him in lessons, and find his instruction admirable from many standpoints.  A gifted and dedicated pedagogue, he clearly loves teaching and working with young people. His tone is friendly but firm, his manner lively and very positive.   He is well-organized, very patient, and knows how to pace and sequence lesson materials to good advantage.  His suggestions are clear and to the point, and he has a fine working knowledge of teaching strategies and the didactic repertoire. I have heard his students often in recital, and found them to be well-prepared, pianistically solid and attentive to musical character and rhythmic vitality.

In my view, these are Andreas Hartmann’s greatest strengths:

·         Flexibility: he readily adapts his instruction to the individual’s needs and abilities, while finding clever ways to challenge and draw out the best s/he is capable of.  He has a flair for instilling essential foundations and disciplines in a way that is never heavy-handed or discouraging.

·         Outstanding motivator with excellent interpersonal skills: he “reads” people well, and enjoys a great rapport with both pupils and their families. I’ve had unsolicited calls from at least three students’ parents, thanking me for assigning them such a terrific teacher. They invariably comment on how well he understands their child, and how much the child loves piano and looks forward to lessons.

·         “Can do” attitude: he’s very energetic and ultra-responsible.  He has very good time management skills, and can handle heavy teaching duties without becoming overwhelmed or resentful.  In fact he has quite a few private pupils in addition to the students he teaches for the Young Pianists, and he regularly schedules extra performance classes and recitals for both groups to ensure that his kids feel prepared and confident on stage.  He is congenial and even-tempered, a “team player” who gets along well with colleagues.   I can always count on him to pitch in when help is needed, and to support the interests of the program and the school.

Mr. Hartmann shows a commendable interest in professional growth, constantly striving to refine his skills and broaden his teaching experience.  Although he now works mainly with pre-college students (ages 5-16), he has amassed a lot of university level teaching experience as an Associate Instructor at I.U. from 1995-99.  The fact that he received a rare fourth-year appointment indicates to me that the Piano Dept. esteemed his abilities no less than I do.  I believe that Andreas Hartmann would be a worthy teacher for students of any age, and I recommend him enthusiastically to your attention.

Yours very cordially,

Dr. Karen M. Taylor
