To Whom it May Concern:                                                                                                            August 4, 2002

How to find a piano teacher.  That was my dilemma.  I called the Indiana University School of Music.  The staff member responsible for piano teaching recommended Andreas Hartmann.

For two years now he has been my instructor.  As a teacher, he listens very carefully to my playing.  Then he makes suggestions to improve technique, to improve tonal expression and to broaden appreciation of the music in general.  He pressed me to advance as rapidly as age (80 years) permits.  He is patient and persistent, insightful of limitations and possibilities.  He makes only encouraging, positive, and sometimes humorous comments.

We practiced a great deal of music for two pianos by Mozart and Grieg.  When two pianos were not available, we played a variety of duets.  In addition to piano work, he presented theory instruction.  That was hard for me.  But once I understood it, I analyzed each piece with understanding and expression.  Each month, Andreas encouraged pupils to play a piece or two in a recital.  Although nerve wracking at first, this becomes, with experience, an event to enjoy and share with other students.

Because of Andreas' sensitivity, humor, genuine interest and positive approach to music, he made my practice hours joyful work.  MY LESSONS WERE THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY WEEK.
